Field hockey team earns No. 6 seed in tourney

The Penn State field hockey team will enter the 2002 NCAA Div.-I Field Hockey Tournament seeded No. 6.

The results were announced at 8 p.m. yesterday from NCAA national office in Indianapolis, Ind.

In the first round of the tournament, the Nittany Lions (16-4) will host No. 7 Kent State (16-6) on Saturday, Nov. 17 at Bigler Field.

Several elements were taken into consideration for the rankings including the rating percentage index (RPI) and strength of schedule. Teams also must have a .500 winning percentage or better to be considered for a berth.

Other Big Ten teams also appearing in the tournament include defending national champions No. 4 Michigan and No. 3 Michigan State.

The championship game will be played at Louisville at Cardinal Park on November 24.
