Talk about being bad hosts.
The Penn State Lady Icers weren't exactly expecting a warm welcome from the Neumann Knights this past weekend, but they probably weren't planning on being left out in the cold with two lopsided defeats.
Saturday's game featured an offensive onslaught by the NCAA Div. III Knights. Led by Missy Pacitti's first-ever hat trick (and the first in Neumann history), the Knights defeated the Lady Icers, 7-1. Forward Katie King scored the lone goal for Penn State.
The Lady Icers did not fare any better on Sunday. Neumann's Lindsay Parsons and Jill Grey both scored hat tricks in the Knights' 9-1 romp. Penn State countered with a lone goal by defender Rebecca Holmes.
"It was really disappointing," King said. "You hate to go and lose both games like that, [but] it just happens sometimes."
Perhaps even worse for the Lady Icers, forward Kate Specchio broke her leg in action and is expected to miss significant time.
Fortunately for Penn State, the games do not count in their American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) standings. As a result, King said she now knows what she and her team needs to focus on, especially on defense.
In preparation for Neumann, Lady Icers coach Jeremy Sharpe had said Penn State needed to focus more on back-checking and neutral-zone play. King reiterated those statements while noting that the score may have been misleading.
"I think the scores are a little bit deceiving," she said. "They scored a lot of goals on power plays, so it wasn't all defense."
King also added that she has concern for her team, noting that she believes that the Lady Icers "haven't been concentrating" at times on defense and that "some people played decent, but it wasn't the best team effort" in the weekend's games.
The Lady Icers continued to play strong offensively, despite their low scores. Penn State forced the Knights' Lauren Voran to make 57 saves for both games combined for an incredible .966 save percentage.
