Even the tallest skyscraper is only as strong as its foundation.
The No. 37 Penn State women's golf team is looking to build its tower on its final tournament of the fall season, the Landfall Tradition. The new tournament will feature several of the country's top teams and will present a challenge for the Lions.
With a new tournament on a course that no Lions have played before, and a field that features No. 16 Purdue, No. 29 Wake Forest and the tournament host, No. 32 North Carolina-Wilmington, course preparation and management could be big factors.
Penn State women's golf coach Denise St. Pierre said the team is looking to continue the momentum it built with a strong final round at the Mercedes Intercollegiate. St. Pierre said that practice this week has helped with the Lions' confidence.
"We created a team competition within the team this week," St. Pierre said. "We wanted the starters to get some scores on the board that they're used to shooting."
Along with Penn State senior Katie Futcher, who is ranked No. 11 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, the Lions will bring seniors Keri Dugan and Meghan Mull, and with freshmen Amber Weinerth and Katrin Wolfe.
"We're all trying to work hard to go out with a bang," Weinerth said.
