In the three years I have been at Penn State, I have taken a number of diversity focus and international/intercultural competence classes. While the classes did open my eyes to some important issues regarding race and culture, the ideas presented were often impractical to everyday situations. Many of them focused more on political correctness, and less on true diversity.
True diversity lies within the individual. It requires interacting with people different from themselves. So I encourage all of the people who complain that Penn State isn't a diverse place to go out and effect change on an individual basis.
Meet people unlike yourself. Take the first step and initiate the conversation. College students from all backgrounds have more similarities than differences. Stop complaining and do something about the situation.
