A limited number of free radon test kits are available from the American Lung Association (ALA).
Radon, an odorless, tasteless gas, is a natural product of radium decaying and is found in dirt and rocks.
Exposure has serious health consequences, including damage to lung tissue, lung cancer and even death.
"Radon can be a problem in any building depending on the ventilation," said Destiny Myers, manager of Lung Health for the ALA. Centre County is included in the "high potential for radon" category by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Nationwide, one in 15 homes has a high radon level, Myers said. For more information on radon, call (800) 23-RADON. For a free test kit, contact the State College ALA at 234-8037.
