If you're too old to trick-or-treat, you're old enough to know that Halloween is about more than fun-sized Snickers. By the time we get to college, we've all had years of experience trying to think of the one Halloween costume that will put all of our past costumes to shame. It's that time of year again, so Venues asked Penn State students: "What has been your most creative Halloween costume?"
Buff bodies and Bach -- what do the two have in common? Tonight Outlaws Theatre will have its weekly show in the Arts Building -- but in the spirit of Halloween, the show's producers promise something extra special. At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Acoustic Brew will present folk artists April Verch Band and Mark Elliot at the Center for Well-Being, 123 Mt. Nittany Rd., in Lemont. Porcupine Tree avoids classification. Classic rock fans won't have to go on a "long distance runaround" this Halloween to hear some of the most progressive music to come out of the 1970s. These days jam bands seem to be everywhere. The scene is ever expanding and new bands pop up everyday. There is an alternative to big budget blockbusters. There is an alternative to clueless comic strips. There is an alternative to political complacency. To borrow a phrase from Tim Taylor of Home Improvement, "It's Tool-time." From Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto to Mike Judge's Office Space, injustice in the workplace is a timeless subject, which fuels the ideas of many authors' works. When you are feeling cold and alone, when you want to indulge in the ambiance of melancholy, when you are down with a case of insomnia -- just put Sade's Lovers Rock in the player and give it a whirl. "Is this your wife? She has a lovely throat." The Penn State Concert Choir will perform at 4 p.m. Sunday in Esber Recital Hall. The choir is made up of 45 student voices and is directed by Lynn Drafall. Native American artist James Luna will speak about his work at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Lipcon Auditorium in the Palmer Museum of Art.
