Letter to the Editor
Cheers to an (almost) undefeated team

Possibly two incompletions and a pass interference away from 8-0?

You bet.

But in the three biggest games of the season, there were more opportunities to win those football games than three poor calls by the officials.

Should we feel sorry for ourselves?

Not a chance.

Is this Nittany Lion team one of the best the school has had?

Certainly.

But 5-3 won't really show it.

Let's examine the games: 22 points in the last seven minutes against Iowa to tie the game? Nobody's late game, zone defense is that soft. Imagine if they'd gotten their act together three minutes earlier, let alone the second half (or the entire game).

Posting 21 points on Michigan's usually stingy D? Cheers. Not putting pressure on shaky Navarre (see Notre Dame game)? Jeers.

And how about against Ohio State? Great defense! Where was it two weeks ago at Michigan? Not-so-great offense. Where was it? Two weeks ago, at Michigan.

All three close losses have come after big wins: two 49-point postings and a huge victory at Wisconsin.

Ouch!

I'm still proud of this team and the resilience it has demonstrated through three tough road games which -- let's be honest -- we dreaded back in August. It's easy to dwell when you're only inches away from 8-0, but there's plenty more football to be played and a shot at a stellar 10-3 season.

What a turn-around from last year! Raise your glasses and toast to the best 5-3 team in the country.
