Penn St. fans encounter hostile Buckeye patrons

For The Collegian

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Being a Nittany Lion fan in Columbus Saturday was rough and hostile to say the least.

"Penn State sucks!" was the nicest profanity being yelled at fellow Penn Staters, said Pete Weinbergh (sophomore-division of undergraduate studies).

He said that his experience brought him closer to his alma mater, and he never had so much pride.

"Going into the game was rough," Weinbergh said, "but after losing and coming out, that was the kicker."

When Bo Gerhart, a senior at Ohio State, was asked how he felt about the Nittany Lions he simply said, "Paterno is a good coach, except for those coke bottles," referring to the legend's trademark glasses.

Heath Brick, a graduate of Ohio State, was asked why the Ohio Staters cheer for a buckeye, he replied, "It's not a buckeye they follow, it's Ohio State, a rich tradition."

The Nittany Lion faithful showed their blue and white proud.

One Penn State student tailgate had some very interesting accounts of their visit to Columbus, and it was only Saturday.

According to Alyson Heller (sophomore-accounting), while sleeping in their hotel room an anonymous Buckeye fan knocked on their door and shouted, "Piss on Penn State, we are Ohio State."

Sara Maguire (sophomore-education) had her weekend topped off when her PSU alumni-tagged car was towed to the local impoundment lot. After shelling out $120 she proceeded to tell the clerk in frustration, "This is so much fun you shouldn't even have to pay!"

Penn State tailgates were spread out among the sea of red.

Although they were few and far between they definitely showed the Buckeyes how to have a real tailgate. One Penn State tailgate had a group of PSU students making Penn State proud.

"We work hard, we play hard," cheered Celeste Brown (sophomore-marketing). She said that they had been making the most noise and having the best time.

"OSU has nothing on Penn State tailgates," shouted Meghan Hamilton (sophomore-finance) to the OSU tailgate across the street.

As the Penn State fans made their way to the Horseshoe to watch the game, they faced the red sea with fire and passion.

One group of Penn State students raised its signs proud and as soon as they came up, the sooner they got ripped down.

Of the sign incident, Devin Keller (sophomore-mechanical engineering) said, "Ohio State has no class, I miss Happy Valley!"

Once in the game the blue and white faithful all convened together in one section. They cheered and roared as loud as they could, but the red had the day, for now.

Laura Zaffuto (sophomore-arts and architecture) and Kara Langlois (sophomore-division of undergaduate studies) said after their experience in Ohio, "Columbus is OK, but it has nothing on Penn State."

Hostility was endured by the blue and white, and in the end they took it well, making Penn State proud.
