Drexel falls to Lady Icers in blowout

Collegian Staff Writer

Fans at the Greenburg Ice Pavillion rarely had to turn their heads to the right to follow the action during the first period of the Penn State Lady Icers' contest against Drexel Saturday night.

The Lady Icers kept the puck in the offensive zone on the left side of the ice for almost the entire period on their way to a 13-0 massacre of Drexel. The game was over soon after the National Anthem concluded, as the Lady Icers scored their first goal just 2:49 into the first period, and dominated the overmatched Drexel players, taking a 4-0 lead at the end of the first.

Sophomore Kate Connolly netted a hat trick during the first, with Kate Specchio scoring the other goal. The Lady Icers outshot Drexel 21-0 in the first period, often looking like they were playing with more skaters on the ice.

"It was a pretty thorough performance," said Lady Icers coach Jeremy Sharpe. "I'm proud of the way we played defensively."

After last weekend's home loss to Chatham, when the Lady Icers allowed multiple odd-man rushes and didn't play particularly well defensively, the team worked extensively on defense throughout the week. Sharpe told the team he wanted them to focus on allowing less than 15 shots on goal per game.

Perhaps this Lady Icers team likes to take things to extremes because it set a goal of allowing no shots on goal during its pre-game talk on Saturday night. Starting goalie Jen McDevitt saw virtually no action, as the team accomplished its goal, holding a 49-0 shots on goal advantage at the game's end.

"We played a really defensive game and things came together," Connolly said.

Sharpe was extremely impressed with the play of defenders Katie Clark, Stephanie Feyock, Becky Holmes and Kristen Reed, who not only allowed no shots on goal, but rarely even let Drexel control the puck in Penn State's zone.

Offensively, the team was led by McVicker and Connolly, who scored three and four goals respectively.

"We have some tough games coming up in the next few weeks," Sharpe said. "We're going to need her [McVicker's] leadership."

At times, the contest looked more like an Ice Capades exhibition than a hockey game, as the Lady Icers skated circles around the Drexel players. It often looked as though any one of a number of Lady Icers could have taken the puck from one end of the ice to the other with little trouble, but the team continued to play unselfishly throughout the game, which Sharpe says is one of the team's greatest attributes.

The Lady Icers amassed 14 penalty minutes, but looked comfortable playing shorthanded, easily killing the seven power plays for Drexel.
