Soccer wins two at home

Collegian Staff Writer

There is one thing that is certain when the Penn State women's soccer team plays at Jeffrey Field -- it will win.

The No. 10 Nittany Lions (15-2-1, 9-1 Big Ten) extended its home winning streak to 19 games at Jeffrey Field and 37 straight victories at home over Big Ten competition, with its pair of wins this weekend. On Friday, the Lions defeated Ohio State (6-9-1, 4-5-1), 4-2, to celebrate their fifth straight Big Ten regular-season title in a torrential downpour. Penn State handled Rutgers (9-7-2) easily yesterday by the score of 2-0, on Senior Day.

"It's a great feeling being part of my first Big Ten championship," freshman Tiffany Weimer said. "Some girls have been here for five years and this is their fifth one. This has been pretty good for my first."

Hermann Trophy winner Christie Welsh got back on the scoring track with two goals and assist against the Buckeyes. Welsh broke a 1-1 tie eight minutes into the second half. She scored the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute as she headed a ball that bounced into the vacated goal.

Welsh said that the bounces began to go her way on her second goal, and she said her first goal was registered on a not very good shot.

Penn State struck first against the Buckeyes, scoring in the third minute of the game, when Welsh set up midfielder Joanna Lohman. She gathered the rebound from her first shot and beat Buckeyes goaltender Emily Hayman.

Ohio State tied the game in the 29th minute on a corner kick, which was set up when two Penn State defenders fell down on the previous play. Paige Harrison put the ball in play and it found its way over Lohman and Ohio State players' heads right to Lindsay Eckles, who put the ball in the net.

Weimer chipped a ball over Hayman's shoulder in the 60th minute, which turned out to be the game-winner.

On Senior Day, the Lions honored their seven seniors and their parents before the game. Some seniors who have not seen a lot of action all season saw some minutes during the Rutgers game.

"They had different types of personalities and different impacts on the program," Penn State women's soccer coach Paula Wilkins said. "Some of them had impacts on the field and some had some big impacts personality-wise and team cohesiveness."

Penn State scored first in similar fashion to the Ohio State game, as Welsh beat a couple of the Scarlet Knights' defenders and found Lohman for the goal. Weimer notched her team-leading 12th goal in the 56th minute when she chipped the ball over the goalie, and Penn State keeper Amanda Brown recorded her first career point as she assisted on the goal.

The Lions' defense held the Rutgers' offense in check holding them nine shots on goal, and recorded its seven shutout of the season.

"She's [Brown] played well," fifth-year senior Gillian Samuel said. "She's doing well taking over for Emily. The defense limited the number of tough shots she had to face today."
