Letter to the Editor
Pressures here to drink underage are prevalent

I have a freshman daughter at East Halls. We came for a visit this homecoming weekend, and we were able to see a few incidences of underage drinking. One of them had some medical consequences.

Both nights that we were there, we observed hundreds of young women from the freshmen dorms walking to Fraternity Row. It was rather chilly out, and none of these young girls had coats on. Some of them were even dressed rather skimpily.

I asked my daughter about that and she said there's no place to put the coats in a fraternity house, and they could get "puked" on also.

I asked my daughter about Late Night Penn State, and she said that she had forgotten all about it and wanted to look into it. She said that she would like to go. However, she doesn't think that anyone would be interested in going with her. Her entire floor attends the fraternity parties.

She often stays in to study, as her workload is pretty heavy. She has attended the parties, and enjoys the dancing, and drinks some, but doesn't like beer. She says that a lot of the kids drink shots in the dorm room before they go out. I wonder which upperclassmen are getting the booze for these kids.

Your Oct. 22 editorial ("First aid: Make partygoers' health top priority") talks about being responsible in obtaining help for a student in a potentially life-threatening situation.

Who are the ones responsible for assisting these students in obtaining the alcohol to begin with? Shame on the young men in the fraternities for supplying these underage students with the alcohol.

Are these the future leaders of our universities and our country?
