Column devalues sniper tragedy in Washington, D.C., attacks 'straw man' (1)
I was shocked after reading the column "Washington's homicidal maniac: Who is he?" (Oct. 23). I find it insulting and morally bankrupt that the author tries to equate the President of the United States with the person behind the recent shootings. I was also surprised to find that The Daily Collegian would print a column whose sole purpose is to ridicule and dishonor the president. I believe that this opinion piece tries to project the author's emotions of contempt and hatred towards President Bush instead of arguing intelligently. In fact, the author tries to argue against a possible war against Iraq by using a never-ending list of ad hominem arguments against the president. To top this argumentative fallacy, he reduces the president into the perfect straw man he can beat up for the rest of his article. Rodolfo M. Ferrer
