Two former death row inmates, who served nearly two decades in prison for crimes they did not commit, will be speaking on campus today.
William Nieves and Ray Krone are speaking with "From Death Row to Freedom: Voices of Innocence," a two-week statewide speaking tour.
The speakers will discuss the issues of class, race and the suppression of evidence that exonerated them at 2:30 p.m. in 100 Thomas Building.
A public forum will take place at 7:30 p.m. in 10 Sparks. The speakers will discuss the danger of executing innocent people and explain why they feel Pennsylvania's death penalty statute is critically flawed.
Interviews with Nieves and Krone will be broadcast on WPSX's Take Note at 5:45 p.m.
Nieves, a native of Philadelphia, spent seven years on death row before his exoneration two years ago. Krone, of Dover, Pa., was on death row in Arizona before being exonerated this spring.
Through the speaking tour, which runs Oct. 9 to 23, Nieves and Krone are calling on Gov. Mark Schweiker to impose an immediate moratorium on executions.
