It wasn't exactly a perfect weekend of hockey, but the Penn State Lady Icers showed they could bounce back from a loss.
The Lady Icers fell to Chatham, 2-1, at the Greenberg Ice Pavillion this past Friday evening, before rebounding on Saturday afternoon to annihilate the University of Pennsylvania, 14-1, in Philadelphia.
The difference in Friday's game was Chatham's game-winning goal with 2:16 remaining in the third period. Defender Stephanie Feyock was beat on a one-on-one, as Chatham's shot squirted past Penn State goalie Jen McDevitt.
All three of the game's goals came in the final period.
The Cougars scored their first goal just 2:36 into the final period before the Lady Icers tied the game with 8:16 remaining on an unassisted goal by sophomore Becky Holmes.
"Alex [McVicker] carried the puck down the ice and the puck came behind her," Holmes said. "It was the perfect opportunity."
Both Penn State and Chatham struggled to find the net Friday night, as neither team had scored a goal during the first two periods.
The Lady Icers however had 16 shots on goal in the first two periods, compared to Chatham's nine. Penn State had opportunities in the third period also, as two of its shots nailed the post to allow Chatham to escape with the win.
"It wasn't a matter of getting outplayed," said Penn State captain Katie King.
"We played well but just couldn't capitalize on our opportunities."
The Lady Icers didn't let Friday's loss completely spoil their weekend, as they dominated Pennsylvania Saturday to finish the weekend with a split.
The team's attack was powered by King and Lauren Shaw, who scored five and four goals, respectively.
"Everyone contributed evenly," said Lady Icers assistant coach Derek Alredge.
"The Chatham loss didn't knock them down."
Arledge added that the first line of Shaw, Faryn Shapiro and Kate Specchio really stepped up its play after the Friday loss.
He said that the team played more as a unit, which was part of the problem on Friday night.
McDevitt also played well in both of the team's games, helping the team to a win on Saturday and keeping the Lady Icers in the game on Friday by stopping multiple 2-on-1 opportunities.
The team's record now stands at 3-1 after two convincing wins against American last weekend.
The Lady Icers will return to the Ice Pavilion Saturday night to battle Drexel University.
