Landscape club to sell fall foods on College Avenue all weekend

Collegian Staff Writer

Fall is officially here, and Penn State's Landscape Architecture Student Society (LASS) is celebrating by bringing apples, apple cider and pumpkins to the streets of State College.

As part of an annual fund-raiser called "FallFest," the society is selling a variety of fall treats in front of Old State Clothing Company, 310 E. College Ave.

Hot and cold apple cider, apples, gourds, candy apples and pumpkins from Harner's Farms, a local orchard, will be sold at the fund-raiser.

The stand opened at 4 p.m. yesterday, and will remain open until Sunday at 6 p.m. Student volunteers will run the booth 24 hours a day until it closes on Sunday.

About 50 students from LASS will participate in the fund-raiser throughout the weekend, said Megan Elrich (junior-landscape architecture), the event's co-chair.

"This is the biggest fund-raiser we have," Elrich said.

Mindy Cooper (senior-landscape architecture), LASS's president, has participated in the event for three years. FallFest helps provide funding for the group's intramural sports team, travel to conferences and its end-of-the-year banquet, Cooper said.

Tom Salaki (junior-landscape architecture) sells apples to Annie Schroll (freshman-biology) on East College Avenue.

"We're a nonprofit organization. This is our major way to bring in money," she said. "It's such a tradition -- we've been doing this for so long now."

Tom Salaki (junior-landscape architecture) has also participated in the apple sale for three years. The fund-raiser is a lot of fun for the organization's students, Salaki said.

"You get to work with people in the major that you wouldn't normally," he said. "It gets you in the fall spirit with the apples and the cider."

FallFest is an event that has occurred within LASS for decades, Cooper said. The event is an important tradition for the State College community and Penn State alumni, she said.

LASS focuses on uniting the students in the landscape architecture major, Cooper said.

Cooper encourages all students to stop by the stand and enjoy some food.

"We don't want a person walking by without a hot cup of apple cider in their hands," she said.
