Album Review
'Barenaked'

The original J.Lo has made an unfortunate comeback.

Before Jennifer Love Hewitt became a screen queen, she aspired to reign as an MTV starlet. Her new release BareNaked is Hewitt's fourth album since 1995's Let's Go Bang, which was a smashing success in Japan.

Sure, Hewitt's pop candy is less offensive than Christina Aguilera's current dirty act, but it's also so ... bland.

Although Hewitt wrote the lyrics all by herself (want a cookie?), any sappy little girl could have penned the exact same sentiments.

As for her vocals: Jen, just because you're the girl next door doesn't mean you have to sound as tame and homely as she does.

With her pseudo-independent-woman vibe, Hewitt obviously wants to be Sheryl Crow or even notorious "bitch" Meredith Brooks, who coincidentally produced BareNaked. But unlike current Sheryl-wannabe Michelle Branch, Hewitt is incapable of loaded vocals or even playing her own instrument.

At least my J.Lo of choice, the illustrious Jennifer Lopez, has that certain je ne sais quoi to back her triple-threat dreams. For Hewitt, it's always going to be a pipe dream.
