My Opinion
Six degrees of Paterno, PSU sports

Still trying to figure out what possessed me to watch all 2 hours of 'Dawson's Creek' Wednesday night ...

As if things couldn't get any worse for the Penn State men's soccer team, head coach Barry Gorman will miss the next month after undergoing successful surgery Monday.

This is a team that has its one-time starting goalie now inexplicably sitting in the Jeffrey Field bleachers during games, and one that took Indiana to double overtime but lost at home to American University and Maryland. The Nittany Lions can't afford too many more losses, especially heading into the meat of the Big Ten schedule, and it will be that much rougher without their veteran leader ....

Well, the Europeans took it to the heavily favored U.S. team in last week's Ryder Cup matches, kicking some butt early Sunday to win the singles matches for the first time ever and reclaim the Cup. Far be it from me to say I told you so, but ....

Jimmy Kennedy says he's being held back from expressing his passion and emotion on the field. Wonder who's holding the preseason Big Ten first-teamer back from making more plays ....

Why didn't Dawson just say his old girlfriend was "just a friend" right away after Joey saw her name in his cell phone?

I mean, the guy's pushing 30, you'd think he'd have more common sense than that ....

Say what you will about Penn State slipping from the ranks of athletic powerhouses, but the school's 29 varsity teams are nothing short of a powerhouse in the classroom.

Sports Illustrated ranked PSU as the No. 40 in its list of America's Best Sports Colleges, but the Lions are at the top of all Div. I public schools in graduation rates. And their fans can chuck water bottles as well as any in the nation ....

Scary thought: You can connect Snoop Dogg to Rodney Dangerfield by playing "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" ....

The fact that the Rams are 0-4 doesn't bother me quite so much as the fact that Browns quarterback Kelly Holcomb has the league's highest quarterback rating. Kelly Holcomb?

Why are all of Joey's college professors younger and hipper than most of their students?

The Sixers are in town for training camp, which begs the question: Will Allen Iverson make it three months into the season before verbally assaulting the recently acquired Keith Van Horn?

And what's the over-under line on how many times Iverson passes to an open Van Horn (assuming Van Horn ever gets open)? Six, seven?

Something tells me Wisconsin won't need stud wide receiver Lee Evans to pick away at a shaky Penn State secondary tomorrow ....

The baseball playoffs always present incredible moral dilemmas, and this year is no different.

When Andruw Jones pulled a Barry Bonds homer back into Turner Field Wednesday, I didn't know whether to boo or cheer ....

No, seriously: Snoop was in Training Day with Denzel Washington, who was in Philadelphia with Tom Hanks, who was in Apollo 13 with Bacon, who was in Animal House with the girl (Sarah Holcomb) who was also in Caddyshack with Dangerfield ...

Did Joe Paterno grab the referee after last week's loss to Iowa because he was angry about the call he didn't get, or was he just upset about the fact that, after 35 years, he might not be getting all of the calls he shouldn't have gotten before?

Speaking of Paterno, he used a peculiar metaphor to explain the improvement of one of his players at his press conference this week.

"If you write enough columns you are going to write a good one once in a while," Paterno said. "Then when you write a good one you are going to write a better one someday."

Good columns only once in a while? I thought Paterno never read the Collegian.
