They haven't been there in a long time.
For the first time in almost four weeks, the No. 13 Penn State women's soccer team will have a game at Jeffrey Field. Today at 5 p.m., the Nittany Lions (5-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) will take on Indiana and on Sunday at 1 p.m., Purdue will come into Happy Valley.
The Lions are returning home after a brutal six-game road trip that saw them post a 4-1-1 record. As the trip was ending, the team was fatigued and anxious to get back home.
Sunday's contest against No. 19 Purdue will be the marquee matchup in the Big Ten this weekend as two undefeated teams in the conference will square off. The Boilermakers (6-1-0, 2-0-0) come into the game riding the shoulders of their strong defense and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, senior Jocelyn Cavalier.
Cavalier has four shutouts this season and Purdue has five as a team.
This weekend may be a proving ground for an up-and-coming Boilermakers team as they also travel to Columbus for a game with Ohio State. Last weekend they shut out Wisconsin and Minnesota by a score of 1-0 in both games.
"I think both games will be challenging," Purdue women's soccer coach Robert Klatte said. "Road games in the Big Ten are always difficult. Penn State has lots of speed up front and is committed to attacking and I'm sure that could pose problems for us."
Klatte says that last year the Boilermakers comtemplated switching their style of play to try and adjust to the Lions' speed advantage, but they decided against it. He believes that if his team can play to its strengths, it can be right there with the Lions.
Penn State will be looking to build on its two wins from last weekend. It was the first time it had done that all season. Now as the season begins to unfold and get into the middle of the Big Ten schedule the Lions believe they are getting closer to being where they want to be.
"We play a little bit better every game," freshman forward Carmelina Moscato said. "We have been doing the little things right and that has contributed to our success."
Moscato will be playing her first game at home for the Lions, as she missed their only home game against Pittsburgh due to playing for the Canadian National Team. Although Moscato is just a freshman, she knows that a strong start and sticking to the game plan is the way to play every game.
A strong start could be crucial against an Indiana team that, under first-year Indiana women's soccer coach Mick Lyon, is gaining some confidence. Lyon has been fired up all season about this team. And it looks as if he has good reason. The Hoosiers (4-2-1, 1-0-1) are off to one of their better starts in the Big Ten.
The Hoosiers are 1-9-0 all-time against the Lions, but six of those losses have come by just one goal.
