USG provides funding for free Loop service

Students living off campus will have an easier time making it to tomorrow's football game against the University of Iowa.

Free Loop buses will operate from 9 to 11 the mornings of home football games.

Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate passed a resolution by a vote of 23-1 Tuesday, funding half the cost required to run one bus as the Town Loop and one bus as the Campus Loop.

The Office of Student Affairs will pay the other $400 for each bus to have the Town and Campus Loop run for games during the remainder of the 2002 football season.

The service was provided last year, but was discontinued this semester due to cuts in Centre Area Transportation Authority's (CATA) budget, USG President Rubina Javeri said.

Many students spoke with Javeri, voicing concerns about the lack of Town and Campus Loop transportation on football game mornings, she said.

"This is a huge service that USG can support and provide for students," Javeri said.

The Loop service will also cover Blue-White weekend, she said.

It was important for Senate to approve the funding for CATA Tuesday, since without it, the service could most likely not be provided tomorrow, Javeri said.

Jim Flook, Senate staff coordinator, expressed concern that the buses might contribute to traffic congestion during football weekends.

The Town and Campus Loop's routes will not change on football game days, Javeri said.
