Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart (Nurse Betty) are literary enthusiasts trying to prove a link between two 19th century poets that seem completely unrelated. In the process, they find themselves falling for each other.
This may sound like the typical premise for a chick flick, but in fact, Possession -- based on a 1990 novel by A.S. Byatt -- rises above the typical to create a truly original and moving film for any fan of the cinema.
Also, Jeremy Northam and Jennifer Ehle are enthralling as the 19th century lovers, and the chemistry between Paltrow and Eckhart is magnificent.
England serves as a lush backdrop for the romance and the historic locations provide an interesting link between the past and present. The camera goes back and forth between the two eras flawlessly and clearly, leaving no confusion as to where the plot is in time.
More engaging than the passionate love is the passionate quest for the truth of the past. The audience discovers the truth along with Eckhart and Paltrow. When the two uncover a new twist in the story, viewers come along for the ride, creating a fascinating story that will leave the audience guessing until the end.
