Almost every week, I witness a near collision involving students who ride bikes to class. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with students riding bikes to get from building to building. I just have a problem with the ones who feel they need to fly down the streets and sidewalks, because they are late or possibly because they think it makes them look cool. I understand people are in a hurry sometimes; I also understand it's not always fun to go slow. I bike-ride and Rollerblade myself. I just don't think students at the university realize who (other than themselves) they may be putting in harm's way.
My girlfriend attends this university. Last year, she was severely injured in a car accident. Among many other injuries, she broke four bones in her neck. She is on her way to recovery now, but if someone now ran into her or anyone like her on a bike that could all change. She could open old wounds.
There are people on the campus with unseen injuries and problems, and careless transportation of any kind could severely hurt them.
I'm not asking everyone to take it easy whenever they ride a bike. I'm just hoping when it comes to places like this campus, everyone takes their time and watches what they're doing -- if not for their own safety, then for others.
