All signs of greatness are starting to point to the No. 7 Penn State field hockey team.
The undefeated Nittany Lions came away this weekend with two impressive victories as they dominated St. Joseph's on Saturday, 7-1, and West Chester 7-0 yesterday.
The two offensively lopsided wins bring the Lions' record to 7-0 on the season, as they closed off their non-conference schedule before the start of Big Ten conference play this week.
"We dominated from the get-go," Penn State field hockey coach Char Morett said.
"We were able to establish a great passing game."
Against the Hawks, Penn State saw a three-goal contribution from Karin Grap, who made her mark coming off the bench.
Her three goals against St. Joe's are a career high.
"It was really great coming off the bench," Grap said.
"It was basically just scrappy play. We played really well under the conditions we had."
In addition, Kelly Concini, Kate Bender, Mary Schaefer and Timarie Legel each added a goal of their own to increase the lead and seal the win.
The Lions had little time to rest as they traveled the next day to compete against intrastate opponent West Chester, who served as Penn State's 13th straight non-conference win.
Yet again, the Lions saw a hat trick, this time credited to Heather Conroy, who also is the team's points leader.
"The non-conference teams we play are great," Conroy said.
"But, the not-so-huge teams in the Big Ten always play us well. It's always a dog fight in the Big Ten."
The Penn State defense, led by goalie Annie Zinkavich, who notched another shutout, was untested but solid against the Golden Rams.
"The defense was very composed," Zinkavich said.
"There's a lot of communication between the whole defense."
Morett was able to show off the depth of the team because she was able to get all of her players some playing time against West Chester.
"There's no doubting anybody, and it's a great feeling for the people coming off the bench," Grap said.
With everyone on the team seeing action on the field as well as finishing the non-conference schedule unscathed brought the field hockey team's confidence to an all-time high.
"I think it's definitely a high confidence, but not a cocky attitude," Kelly Larson said.
