It was billed as a shootout at the O.K. Corral and Zack Mills and Luke McCown did not disappoint the 103,987 fans in attendance.
Mills and McCown combined for almost 600 yards of offense, but Mills had the quicker draw as No. 15 Penn State defeated Louisiana Tech, 49-17, today at Beaver Stadium. Mills completed 14 of his 21 attempts for 163 yards and one touchdown, all of Mills' yards came in the first half where he completed 14 of 17 passes.
For every shot that McCown fired at the Nittany Lions' secondary in the first half, the Lions' defense was able to fire right back in the second half. Two interceptions in the second half, one by Deryck Toles that set up a touchdown and one by Paul Cronin, returned 34 yards for a touchdown fueled a defensive effort in the second half that held the Bulldogs' high-powered offense to just seven points. McCown finished the day 36-56 for 402 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.
La. Tech received the ball in the second half and promptly took the kick-off on a 9 play, 80-yard drive culminating with a 9-yard touchdown pass from McCown to Ahmad Harris to make the score 21-17. This was as close as the game would get.
La. Tech forced the Lions to punt on their first possession, but McCown was intercepted by Deryck Toles and the Lions took possession of the ball inside the Bulldogs 25-yard line. Robinson for the second time in the game took a shotgun snap, while Mills lined up as a wide receiver, and rushed six yards for his third touchdown of the day on his third carry. Robinson totals were six carries for 35 yards along with one completed pass attempt for six yards.
The defense clamped down in the second half and gave the Lions' short fields to work with on offense. Bryant Johnson had a 45-yard punt return that set up a Larry Johnson six-yard touchdown run. The defensive line started to assert themselves in the second half and Michael Haynes on the very next drive put a vicious hit on McCown at the end of the third quarter causing a fumble that Haynes recovered and returned 12 yards. Larry Johnson then rumbled in for his third touchdown of the day this time from three yards out. Johnson rushed for 147 yards on 17 carries.
21 points were scored in the first 8:47 as Penn State marched on two 80-yard drives for scores and La. Tech had one of their own. Robinson opened the scoring for the Lions taking an option pitch from Mills on the right side and going into the endzone untouched. La. Tech came right back with a nine-play drive capped off when McCown found D.J. Curry in the back of the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown.
Each team had two more scoring opportunities in the first half, the Lions capitalized with a Larry Johnson 19-yard touchdown reception from Mills and Robinson took a snap from center for a 5-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs however settled for two 19-yard field goal attempts and Josh Scobee made his first attempt and pushed his second wide left making the score, 21-10 at the half.
