[ Friday, Sept. 20, 2002 ] Letter to the Editor
Fans from Nebraska aren't totally sinless
I was insulted by Mr. Dilla's letter that appeared yesterday ("Postgame taunts made my 4-year-old son cry"). While I certainly agree with him that rude and unsportsmanlike taunts are unnecessary after a game, and I am not defending those that took part in that kind of celebrating, I take offense when he says, "You'll never see a bunch of fans at a Nebraska game running around cursing and rudely taunting fans from the opposition." The pomposity of this statement amazes me, as if Nebraska fans are above the rest of humanity. Face it, there are jerks everywhere, and Lincoln, Neb., or Alexandria, Va., are no exception. It's sad, and it's unfortunate, but it's a fact of life. Getting on a soapbox and preaching to Penn State fans about their unacceptable behavior is just as demeaning and immature as the comments of a few hostile fans. And as for your 4-year-old crying, I am sorry that he was scared and upset, but it seems to me a rowdy college football game is hardly the place for a young child in the first place. Julianna Tumbas
