Cindy Song disappearance to receive national spotlight

Collegian Staff Writer

Almost a year after Penn State student Cindy Song disappeared, the investigation is finally beginning to receive national media attention.

Tonight, the Lifetime Network program Unsolved Mysteries will air a segment on the missing 22-year-old. The segment, "Without a Song," will be shown at 8 p.m.

University spokesman Bill Mahon said he is happy the missing persons case is finally gaining notice but hopes that the television program focuses on Song's story and not the paranormal.

"The disappearance of one of our students is a serious matter," Mahon said. "I hope they treat it seriously."

He also said he hopes the extra attention will help police find new leads in the 11 month-long investigation.

"It's been frustrating for so much time to pass with no leads," he said. "It's really important to solve this and find out what happened."

Ferguson Township Police Department Det. Brian Sprinkle is also hopeful about the program.

"We're not exactly sure what [the segment] is going to do," he said. "[But] I'm looking forward to it."

Sprinkle and other investigators are hoping the segment will give investigators new information regarding what happened to Cindy Song.

The investigation into Song's disappearance has found few leads and little information since she vanished in the early morning hours of Nov. 1.

Song was last seen being dropped off at her Clinton Avenue apartment after attending a Halloween party with friends.

Since then, no one has seen or heard from Song.

While the investigation had shown signs of hope during the first few months of the case, the number of leads received by police slowly began to dwindle.

Leads that were once promising became dead ends, and investigators were left with the few clues they already had.

Searches preformed in the areas surrounding Song's apartment also came up empty, leaving Sprinkle, the lead detective in the case, without any new information.

Therefore, Sprinkle decided to contact Unsolved Mysteries, with the hope that someone watching would have some information helpful to the investigation.
