Penn State continues erratic soccer play

Collegian Staff Writer

For the No. 18 Penn State Men's soccer team there haven't been many constants this season. One thing that can be counted on though is winning one and losing one every weekend.

Penn State (3-3) showed fans again this weekend how one team can look like a championship contender one day and an intramural dorm team the next.

The men completely shut down the Villanova Wildcats (2-4) on Friday night at Jeffrey Field, 2-1. But don't let that score fool you.

The Lions controlled the entire game and only allowed one shot on goal.

Then they showed up yesterday flatter than ever and were upset by the American Eagles (5-1), 2-1.

"We are right now a Jekyl and Hyde team," Penn State men's assistant coach Marlon LeBlanc said.

On Friday night the men mixed things up from the start. Instead of Ryan Sickman starting between the pipes, sophomore goalie Ryan Moate got the go-ahead from men's head coach Barry Gorman.

Sophomore phenom Chad Severs put Penn State on the board 19 minutes into the game by scoring his sixth goal of the season.

Penn State also showed why fans have a lot to look forward to when nine of the eleven second half starters were either freshmen or sophomores.

Freshman midfielder David Walters scored the first goal of his Penn State career 62 minutes into the game. Sophomores Mike Lindemann and Severs were both credited with assists.

Penn State's Gabe Bernstein leaps to win a header while two American University defenders can only look on. The Lions have the ability to thrive, but lack consistency.

"It was unbelievable," Walters said. "It couldn't be better, Friday night at home. My whole family was here."

Just when everyone thought that the ship was righted, the men proved that no game can be taken for granted.

Penn State managed just six shots against the Eagles yesterday and their lone goal came on a penalty shot by senior captain, Brent Jacquette.

American opened up the scoring 20 minutes into the game when forward Peter Philipakos scored on the first shot of the game.

Jacquette's goal two minutes later tied the game at halftime.

American's Shawn Kuykendall put the Eagles on top for good 62 minutes in when his free kick beat Moate near-post.

So with Penn State having more than half of the amount of losses right now than they did all of last year, the leadership is in question.

"I think the leaders, the so-called leaders, on our team need to do a better job doing that.

Cause if we do a good job we are not going to lose here," LeBlanc said.

Another reason for the team's inconsistency may be how young this squad is compared to teams in the past.

But according to the players that excuse will not cut it anymore this season.

"Everybody here has played at the high levels," Moate said. "No one can use youth as an excuse anymore."
