State College police: Fans stay 'well behaved' with average citation numbers

Collegian Staff Writer

Although the number of calls received by the State College Police Department was higher than normal this weekend, police said the weekend went very smoothly with only an average number of citations written.

"For the most part, people were well behaved," State College Police Department Sgt. John Gardner said. "There were no ugly incidents."

The Pennsylvania State Police were in town this weekend helping the State College police not only with traffic but also with crowd control.

The state police provided officers, as well as an "eye in the sky" -- a helicopter that was used for traffic control and in case of a serious situation.

"We were prepared for any eventuality," Gardner said. "But we were happy with how things turned out."

The number of calls received by the department, 272, was higher than average Gardner said. However, the 89 citations written were about average for a football weekend in Happy Valley.

Gardner attributed the lack of trouble this weekend to the major police presence and people acting responsibly.

"The police appreciate [people's] cooperation," he said.

He also said there were no reports of confrontations between Penn State and Nebraska fans. The majority of the citations involved drinking, police said.

Many of the citations were for underage drinking, public drunkenness, open container laws and disorderly conduct -- such as public urination.

But there was only one arrest for selling counterfeit Penn State tickets and one citation for ticket scalping by State College police.

"I think we came through this relatively well," he said. "When you have a night game like that, you never know what to expect."

Gardner also said police would be pleased if the rest of the football game weekends this season go as well as this one. "If ensuing home games come off like this one, it'll be a good season," he said.
