No repeats: Save the town from seeing red

As the men of Penn State take on Nebraska this weekend, many pairs of eyes will be watching, but not just the game.

Penn State's recent postgame past is littered with images of pepper spray, broken windows and flying shrubs. After one particularly contentious game, too many students went up against police, Judicial Affairs and the local courts, only to come out on the other side, stripped of the title "student."

If all that could happen after a little basketball game, think about tomorrow night.

Police are more vigorous in their efforts to deter riotous behavior these days, whatever the excuse. And the fate of a student's time at Penn State can change as quickly as it'll take Zack Mills to throw a touchdown pass tomorrow.

Students should realize that stupid actions not only affect their own future, but also the way State College and the university are run. Imagine how much it costs to pay all that overtime for all those extra police officers. Any repeat of the past won't do anything to make that price tag cheaper.

Stop to remember that the next time conversation turns to the dreaded tuition increases.

If Penn State wins this weekend -- heck, even if it loses -- remember to celebrate in, but not to obliterate, our beloved Beaver Canyon.

Give the police a boring weekend; enjoy that victory so many of us are hoping for; and remind yourself to take it easy before the partying starts.

Oh, and what's that we heard about wearing lots of blue?
