The 20-year-old Penn State woman that fell from an eighth-story window early Sunday morning remains in critical condition at Hershey Medical Center, a hospital official said yesterday.
The woman, Natalie Paglione, fell from the window of her Beaver Terrace apartment, 456 E. Beaver Ave.
The inciden took place around 2:55 a.m. Sunday, the State College Police Department said.
"We expect she will survive," State College Police Department Sgt. John Wilson said.
Associated Realty Property Management, who manages the majority of the units in Beaver Terrace, does not manage Paglione's apartment.
According to the department's on-going investigation, Paglione was furnished alcohol in the hours before the accident at a downtown party.
But according to one of Paglione's friends, it was not the alcohol that caused the accident.
"She was not drunk," said Christen Torno (junior-accounting). Torno is a one of Paglione's close friends.
"She was by herself in her room getting ready for bed with the [apartment] door locked."
According to Torno, none of the windows in the eighth floor apartment had screens, which may have been the cause of the accident.
"Some guy came to paint that day and left the window open," Torno said.
She also added that Paglione and her roommates had suggested they shut the windows each night before going to bed.
"We're assuming she went to shut the window because of the rule," she said.
The windows, which start a few feet above the floor and nearly extend to the ceiling, are also very wide, Torno added. "You can almost step out."
Torno said the events preceding the accident are as follows:
Paglione's night began at a friend's place, where they remained until around midnight, when Paglione and a roommate left because they became bored.
Torno said she knew Paglione was not drunk because Paglione had been speaking to some friends from home after she returned from her friend's to her own apartment that night.
Torno said she arrived at Paglione's apartment around 2:45 that morning and found the door to the apartment locked.
Torno said that about a minute and a half after she got to the apartment, police arrived
As part of the investigation, police said they are looking into who provided alcohol to Paglione.
Because Paglione is underage, police officials say they may file criminal charges against the providers of the alcohol.
