Piecynski leads golfers to third-place finish

Fueled by a strong outing from sophomore Greg Piecynski, the Penn State men's golf team finished a strong third out of 15 teams this weekend at the Badger Invitational in Madison, Wisc.

The Nittany Lions finished with a team total of 10 under par in the three-day event, behind only Toledo (-21) and Illinois (-13).

Piecynski led the attack with a five-under par total of 211, a shot ahead of senior teammate Jim Fuller, who shot 71-72-69.

Piecynski was atop the leaderboard Saturday after shooting a 67 during each of the first two days, but fell off after a 77 yesterday.

He finished three shots behind Toledo's Brad Heaven.

"He just did a tremendous job," said Penn State men's golf coach Greg Nye.

The next-highest Penn State finisher was sophomore Mark Leon, who finished tied for 25th with a score of 218. Junior Ted Neville was one stroke back at 219.

Host Wisconsin, Iowa and Indiana were among the Big Ten schools in the field that the Lions bested.

"This was a very strong field," Nye said.

"Finishing third was a tremendous accomplishment."
