Letter to the Editor
Drinking culture seems to pervade this campus

I have been living here for only a little over a week and I have seen more publicly intoxicated people than I ever thought possible. At a campus this large, I can only imagine how much people drink, and quite frankly, I am not willing to venture a guess.

Sure, I have seen the posters hanging everywhere about how we "party smart," only imbibing zero to four drinks, but how accurate can that be? I read in The Collegian that less than 1,000 people participated in that survey, but there are 40,000 of us at this school. Who is to say the people who filled out that survey represent the entire Penn State-University Park population? I don't believe those statistics to be true. The mountains of bottles in the garbage cans and on the lawns of apartment complexes further illustrate my point.

In the middle of this lies the "results" of studies by the Princeton Review and Bacardi, ranking us as one of the top party schools in the nation. Good grief! I thought I came here to learn something other than fickle statistics. I think this is a party school, and I am starting to wonder if I am the only one who is concerned about it.

A Penn State University degree used to mean something; I am going to make sure that mine still does. Pass the Cherry Coke, please.
