Construction projects on Atherton Street and Allen Street should cause only minor headaches for motorists this semester, officials said.
Work on the new Information Sciences and Technology Building on Atherton Street will force an occasional overnight closing of the street, said Anne Pernell, project executive for Turner Construction Company.
When Atherton Street closes, motorists will follow a detour through West Campus, Pernell said.
There isn't a set schedule for closure as work on the building is weather-dependent.
However, the road will not be closed on any Friday or Saturday nights.
On construction nights, the street will close at 9 p.m. and reopen at 7 a.m. the following morning.
A reconstruction project that has closed part of Allen Street since June is expected to be completed by the end of the week, three weeks ahead of schedule. Allen Street will continue to be closed daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Beaver Avenue and Foster Avenue through the end of the week.
"All of the work was planned around the students returning and football traffic," said Jack Barndt, HRI Inc. project foreman.
The $700,000 reconstruction of the 100 block of Foster Avenue and the 200 block of Allen Street includes resurfacing, replacement of a sanitary sewer line and more than 40 new street lights.
The work features two new pedestrian traffic nodes on the north side of the intersection at Beaver Avenue and Allen Street.
A pedestrian node is a concrete extension of the existing curb that reduces the distance pedestrians must walk while crossing the street.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation recently approved plans to put four nodes at the intersection of Beaver Avenue and Garner Street, said Mark Whitfield, public works director for State College.
Other areas on Beaver Avenue have also been identified as possibilities for future pedestrian nodes, Whitfield said.
