Collegian Magazine:
Fresh Start Issue

Summer Session is officially over and Penn State freshmen who have nearly six weeks of experience had many words of wisdom for their freshmen classmates joining them for Fall Semester.

Think about waking up next to the same person every day for almost nine months. Maybe this person wakes up at 6 a.m. every day. Maybe it's 2 p.m. Maybe the person in the other bed doesn't like to shower every day. No, this is not married life -- it's dorm life.

The typical East Halls dorm dimensions are 15 feet, 2 inches by 12 feet, 5 inches. Every year, new freshmen struggle to turn this small space into a bearable living environment.

For some students, entering their dorm rooms for the first time can be a traumatizing experience. They ask themselves how they can take a room with chipping paint, plain curtains and bare furniture and make it look like home.

My Opinion: Nichole Dobo

The typical Penn State freshman deals with a lot of changes upon entering college, from living with someone new to learning where everything is on a large campus.

Deciding the future at the age of 18 can seem impossible, yet some students know exactly what they want their lives to entail.

Nobody ever said being under 21 was easy. Then again, nobody ever said it has to be boring, either. While some students attend fraternity and apartment parties, there are many alcohol-free activities.

Although buying books may not be the most exciting activity after arriving at college, it must be done. The process can run smoothly if students are aware of a few essentials.

Drinking underage. Selling drugs. Using a fake ID. Urinating in public. Some incoming freshmen, far away from their parents' watchful eyes for the first time, might find themselves involved in these common illegal activities.

Penn State students call the HUB-Robeson Center by one name, "the HUB," but it can be used for many different activities.

More than 4,200 computers are available on campus, but some incoming freshmen are unsure of whether to take advantage Penn State's technology or to bring their own personal computers.

My Opinion: Randy Winder

First year away at college, and Mom and Dad are not around to cater to nutritional hunger needs anymore. Penn State Food Services has value and variety to offer famished freshmen.

Departure to college is often a detachment from familiar medical treatment, but finding the equivalent of mom's chicken soup isn't too far away at Penn State.

Freshmen who were at Penn State for the Summer Session have voiced the importance of managing time at the college level.

Penn State students make use of the many fitness opportunities available on campus. A Penn State fitness pass is a small card Penn State students might want to have -- and won't want to lose.

Every Tuesday night, 27 undergraduates meet in a room on the third floor of the HUB-Robeson Center to discuss student life at Penn State. This group of people is the Undergraduate Student Government Senate, one branch of student government at this university.

My Opinion: Kim Tranell

Old Main, Schwab Auditorium and the HUB-Robeson Center. They are all places that freshmen get to know relatively fast.

Imagine it is a cold day in December. There are six inches of snow on the ground and your 8 a.m. class is in the Willard Building near the middle of campus.
