Heated competition in Tussey wing contest

FOR THE COLLEGIAN

Area restaurants will face off at 6 tonight in the weekly wing challenge at Tussey Mountain.

Cliff Turner and the Afterburners will provide entertainment for the evening beginning at 7 p.m.

Four restaurants will compete for the title of best wings, including Home Delivery Pizza, 1820 S. Atherton St., the Down Under Steak House at Toftrees, 1 Country Club Lane, the Hoffbrau Haus of Allentown, and the Eutaw House of Spring Mills.

General admission is free of charge, but people can purchase tickets to exchange for wings -- $1 will buy four wings from any of the participating establishments.

The winner will be determined by whichever restaurant has received the most tickets at the end of the night.

Tussey Mountain employee Cori Donaghy said the event, which started in mid-July and ends in mid-August, takes place every Thursday and attracts about 1,500 people.

"People tend to come when they know their favorite vendor will be there," Donaghy said.

Any restaurant expressing interest can register to participate in the wing challenge, but only four or five competitors are featured each week.

With 25-cent wings and live music with no cover, it's a good deal, Donaghy said.

Home Delivery Pizza will be participating in the wing challenge for the second time.

The restaurant will be offering three varieties of wings. One is its original Home Delivery Pizza secret recipe wing.

Also being featured are honey garlic wings and seven-pepper wings.

"It's a nice atmosphere," Charles Bitner, general manager of Home Delivery Pizza, said.

"Everyone loves wings, and this gives you the opportunity to try a lot of wings in one day."

While people chow down on wings and other food, the group Cliff Turner and the Afterburners will provide live music.

The band is an eight-piece ensemble that performs high-energy rhythm and blues.

Bassist Cliff Turner said the band has played the wing challenge a few times before and is looking forward to tonight.

"You've got a live performance and good food," Turner said. "It's a great combination."
