American Libraries recognizes Web site

A Web site designed by the Penn State Public Broadcasting organization, "Kid's Times," was selected to join the American Library Association's Great Web Sites for Kids.

The Web site, www.kidstimes.org, is designed for children 14 and younger.

"We're ecstatic," said Ajamil Calloway, Kid's Times editor and utilization coordinator. "With all of the other great kids' Web sites, it is truly an honor."

When the site first debuted last November, its function was to supplement the award-winning Penn State news program, What's in the News.

The "What's in the News" series keeps children informed on current events. It also teaches geography, world cultures, science, history, art and various other educational topics.

The Web site makes news interactive, Calloway said.

"We wanted to put together a site where kids could actually post their own articles," Calloway said.

Last year's Sept. 11 tragedy had a strong impact on many children across the country, and Kid's Times has already begun planning an anniversary special. There will be a live call-in where children can ask about terrorism, Calloway said.

"We pride ourselves on being a great program for kids," Calloway said.
