Students find viable options to get into shape
Indoor and outdoor facilities and intramural sports help students feel fit.

For The Collegian

Penn State students make use of the many fitness opportunities available on campus. A Penn State fitness pass is a small card Penn State students might want to have -- and won't want to lose.

Fitness passes can be purchased in the White Building, located on Shortlidge Road near the HUB-Robeson Center, as early as the day students arrive.

"There are fitness opportunities at all ends of campus," Lisa Alexander (junior-geography) said.

From the Intramural (IM) Building, the White Building, Rec Hall and the Fitness Loft at McCoy Natatorium, her words ring true. The fitness pass is good at each of these locations.

Each building offers weights, machines and gym space. The White Building and Natatorium have pools, and aerobics is offered at the White Building.

Aerobics classes range from the typical step classes to kickboxing and a class called "butts and guts." The schedule of classes is available on the fitness Web site, www.psu.edu/dept/fitness/schedules.htm.

The outdoor track, located behind the Multi-Sport Facility on University Drive, is open to students for running and walking. Once it snows, students can use the indoor track.

Intramural sports are another way Penn Staters choose to stay fit and have a good time. Fall intramural sports include softball, tennis, golf, 'punt, pass and kick,' football, cross-country and volleyball. Registration deadline for softball and tennis is Aug. 24, and other deadlines that approach quickly are for golf and football. Contact the intramural sports office at 865-5401 for further information.

The variety of club sports offered at Penn State provides yet another opportunity for fitness.

The list of club sports is extensive, and it includes almost multiple interests.

To contact the club sports office, call (814) 865-9202 as soon as possible for registration information.

"There are plenty of facilities, equipment and recreational teams available all the time," Amanda Foderaro (freshman-communications) said.
