Animal activism might be cause for vandalism

The owner of Mr. Charles Shop Inc. spoke out yesterday against the vandals who damaged her storefront twice.

An anonymous e-mail sent to The Daily Collegian claimed the Animal Liberation Front had carried out the attacks because the store sells fur.

Charlene Rosen, the owner, said a denim jacket displayed in the window has a faux fur collar.

"I am angry and find this offensive," Rosen said. "This is totally objectionable and even if it were real fur, that doesn't matter. No one has a right to destroy anyone else's property. If that's what our society is coming to, then we have a real problem."

Rosen said the damage cost nearly $500. Early Tuesday morning, two rocks marked with anti-fur slogans were thrown through the store's glass doors. A second attack happened early the next day as the store's left display windows and sidewalk were covered with red powder or paint.

The North American Animal Liberation Front and the State College Police Department officers assigned to the case could not be reached for comment yesterday.
