Art show provides 'Another Choice'
The four-day event is a relaxed indoor alternative to the Arts Festival.

For a break from the sun and heat, there's another way to enjoy art during the 36th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts. Another choice for artistic entertainment is available for the ninth consecutive year through Another Choice Art Show and Sale.

The four-day event, which began yesterday and continues through Sunday, will take place at the Lion's Community Club, 130 S. Academy St., in Boalsburg. The sale's hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and tomorrow, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

This modest but thorough art show provides the art of larger festivals along with the comfort of air conditioning and breathing room. Nine years ago, what began as a collection of artwork among three or four friends has slowly developed into a significant event during Arts Fest.

Coordinator Harriet M. Rosenberg found a location to escape the heat and overcrowded conditions of the State College area festivals when she established the show at the Lion's Community Club.

This year's display will feature work from eight artists including paintings, sculptures, glass, calligraphy, jewelry, ceramics and clothing. All participating artists are State College locals.

"There are so many people in the State College area during this time," said Rosenberg, who teaches drawing and design at Penn State Altoona. "The first couple of years we had more friends than strangers, but our low-key setting is becoming more well-known. ... It's quieter, people have a lot of time to look around, and the artists are there and want to talk with you about their work."

New to this year's show is Saturday night entertainment beginning at 7:30 p.m. Coordinators of the event are planning to show a projection movie of the French silent film The Red Balloon, followed by the cult production Harold and Maude.

Rosenberg said the site is spacious enough to allow for a relaxing atmosphere for the expected crowds. With a parking lot attached to the community club and located in the center of Boalsburg, Another Choice Art Show is accessible to Arts Fest tourists.

The show is run in a comfortable atmosphere and is expected to remain that way, Rosenberg said.

With such little advertising, the publicity of the event became known primarily through word of mouth. Some visitors come back to the sale every year, informing more people and therefore, increasing the significance of the event.

"This year, we have a very interesting spread of art mediums," Rosenberg said. "When we have a good product, people can recognize the difference."
