Letter to the Editor
'Under God' added late; change good for all

Andrew Guy was absolutely right when he said "One nation, under Buddah" has a nice ring to it. To add support to his comments, I would like to point out that people claim they want to say the pledge "the way it was written," not knowing that "under God" was added in 1954.

This is part of the whole separation of church and state argument. If you want an example of why it does not work, look at Islamic countries. Right there are half a dozen or more prime examples of what happens when religious extremists, be they Muslim, Christian or Scientologist, try to govern people.

Have you heard about the court house in West Chester, Pa., where the Ten Commandments were covered up because an atheist was offended by their presence in a government office? People went nuts. "Its part of our history," they said. "Everyone follows the commandments, everyone knows them, they need to be there."

I think my favorite comment was "God is on the Liberty Bell, should we melt it?" Those people don't seem to understand the difference between an active icon of government and a passive, historical landmark!

Finally, notice it's not the minorities who are clamoring for this union between church and state; they don't seem to feel that all the Biblical references and mention of God is a part of this country we just cannot live without.
