The rich history behind the 36th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts has helped mold it into the celebration that it is today.

Summer is in full swing, and to students remaining in State College to work or take summer classes, campus has been relatively empty since the end of spring semester. The usual crowds of students around classroom buildings are absent, Old Main lawn is bare except for the occasional sunbather and the streets downtown are just shy of busy.

Officially, the 36th annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts begins today and ends Sunday.

Though it may not be possible to jump into street paintings as in Mary Poppins, the Italian Street Painting Festival allows people to see artwork in process.

Sona. Axum. Stept On -- these well-known local bands, among others, will be playing Saturday at Mike's Music, 226 E. College Ave., during the 36th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts.

When the sun goes down, those attending the 36th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts will still have some larger-than-life masterpieces to gaze at in wonder.

It was the early 1970s at Penn State when Steve Artz, class of 1974, first met his future partner and best friend, John C. Mason, class of 1971.
