Music manual
A guide to summer festivals

Collegian Staff Writer

As we return to our respective homes in the next week, our unsatisfied urge to party will call out to us "More, more." Sure, Penn State and The Bryce Jordan Center pulled together many great acts for us this year, but many is often never enough.

All day music festivals are the panacea for hardcore music enthusiasts as well as the all-around partier. This summer gives multiple options to both, with many major festivals hitting the northeast. Here are just a few of the events where college students can party, dance, drink, and most importantly, listen to great music to their hearts' content.

Raine Maida and the rest of Our Lady Peace will be a part of the HFStival in May.

HFStival 2002

When:
May 25 and 26
Where: R.F.K. Stadium, Washington, D.C.
Who: The Strokes, Eminem, Alien Ant Farm, Papa Roach, Good Charlotte, Hoobastank, Our Lady Peace, New Found Glory, Paul Oakenfold, Sum 41, Dashboard Confessional and many more.
What: Memorial Day Weekend marks the 13th HFStival, one of the biggest annual rock fests in the nation. Advertising over 60 bands ranging from local DC area acts to nationally renowned bands, the festival spans two days and has entertainment in and outside of RFK stadium. In the past HFStival has entertained fans with bands such as Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, Cypress Hill, Third Eye Blind, Godsmack, Vertical Horizon and more - all in one day. This year marks the second time that the festival has expanded to two days to encompass more live entertainment than ever before. For more information, go to www.whfs.com.

Good Charlotte is on the bill for this year's Warped Tour.

Warped Tour 2002

When:
Various
Where: Various
Who: New Found Glory, NOFX, Bad Religion, Alkaline Trio, Allister, Something Corporate, MxPx, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Reel Big Fish, Good Charlotte, The Starting Line, and dozens more.
What: One of the nation's biggest tours continues to make hundreds of thousands of fans happy this summer as Warped Tour hits up almost 50 cities nationwide. The tour will be stopping by many northeast cities in mid August. Hosting over 60 bands, everyone is sure to find more than a few acts to enjoy. On top of musical acts, the tour also includes an athletic show and other various attractions. For more information, go to www.warpedtour.com.

Jim Adkins and the rest of Jimmy Eat World will play the Y100 Feztival at the Tweeter Center in Camden, N.J.

Y100 Feztival

When:
June 7
Where: Tweeter Center, Camden, N.J.
Who: System of a Down, Incubus, Papa Roach, Jimmy Eat World, Alien Ant Farm, Pete Yorn, Unwritten Law, Our Lady Peace, Dashboard Confessional and more.
What: New Jersey and Pennsylvania's equivalent to the HFStival, the Y100 Feztival packs a similar, yet still gratifying list of bands. Past acts include Barenaked Ladies, Weezer, Lifehouse, Vertical Horizon and Good Charlotte, among many others. Penn Staters who missed Pete Yorn or Jimmy Eat World at Movin' On this year will get the chance to see both artists on stage in the same day once again. For more information, go to www.y100.com.

Godsmack lead singer Sully Erna will appear with the rest of the group in Latrobe, Pa.

Rolling Rock Town Fair

When:
July 27
Where: Westmoreland Fairgrounds, Latrobe, Pa.
Who: P.O.D., Nickelback, Outkast, Godsmack, Alien Ant Farm, Sevendust, Default and more.
What: Not much information has been released about this year's Rolling Rock Town Fair, but after pulling over 50,000 people last year to see bands such as Live, Oleander, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Deftones and Staind, this year can only be bigger and better. Located in western Pennsylvania, Latrobe has little to offer with the exception of being home to Rolling Rock Beer, but for many rockers the combination of alcohol and music is more than enough of a calling. Go to www.rollingrock.com/townfair/index.html.

Ozzfest 2002

When:
Various
Where: Various
Who: Ozzy Osbourne, Rob Zombie, System of a Down, P.O.D., Drowning Pool, Adema, and more.
What: Starting off in the northeast in mid-July, this year's Ozzfest will most likely be the biggest in years, thanks in part to Ozzy's recent rediscovered fame on MTV's The Osbournes. Fans looking forward to seeing Rage Against the Machine led by new frontman Chris Cornell will be disappointed to learn that the group has backed out of this year's fest, to be replaced on the fest's main stage by Rob Zombie. Either way Ozzfest provides a great alternative to the more generic rock fests this summer as well as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the great Ozzy himself. For more information, go to www.ozzfest.com.
