Whiplash, a Penn State dance group with as many styles as it has members, will perform its second annual spring performance -- "Dancing Around the World" -- at 4 p.m. Sunday in the White Building.
"We chose the theme since it describes the variety the best," said Whiplash secretary Piyali Chatterjee.
"We don't just mean through culture, but through all different styles of dance."
The performance features 13 pieces choreographed by group members. Whiplash Vice President Meg Kuhn said dance styles include African, Indian, Latin, techno, belly, hip-hop, modern and cheerleading.
"The members in our group all have very different backgrounds of dancing," she said, "but we all come together to do what we love. This particular show will have 13 numbers with all very different styles."
Started by students three years ago, Whiplash lets members perform and take classes while balancing a college workload.
Spring semester is usually dedicated to rehearsing for the performance, said Kuhn (junior-health policy and administration).
"How we run things is that if you dedicate the time and learn the piece, then you can be in the piece," Kuhn said. "Usually everyone picks the numbers they like best and it works out that everyone performs about three or four pieces."
Chatterjee (sophomore-public relations) added, "Whiplash has so much talent. It gives you a chance to learn about and do other dances. It's hard work and dedication but it will be all worth it after this weekend. I can't wait to see how the show turns out and the people's reactions."
Tickets for the performance are $3 with a student ID and will be available at the door.
