Commonwealth awards distributed at luncheon

Outstanding Scholar-Athletes and campus representatives were recently honored at the Commonwealth Campus Athletic Conference awards luncheon.

The John Egli Scholar Athlete Award winners were Carolyn Hilden, Debbie Politti, Mark Colleyacme and Jason Shambaugh.

Hilden, a sophomore two sport athlete (Basketball, Volleyball) All-Conference Basketball with a 3.93 GPA in Human Development and Family Studies from Delaware campus, was chosen as one of the female student-athletes.

Politti, a sophomore All Conference in both Basketball and Volleyball with a 3.1 GPA in Finance from Berks- Lehigh Valley, was the other female winner.

The male winners were Colleyacme is a sophomore basketball player from Penn State Wlkes-Barre with a 3.98 GPA in Finance, and Shambaugh, a sophomore All-Conference golfer from Mont Alto with a 3.82 GPA in Turfgrass science.

Besides their academic and athletic achievements, all four students were active in community service and volunteer work.

Dr. Ken Swalgin, York, a former basketball coach and present Asst. Professor of Kinesiology, and Fredina Ingold, Altoona Athletic Director, who has also coached and performed a number of duties in athletics and admissions were inducted into the Robert Scannell Roll of Honor for their service to the CCAC.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley, Commonwealth College Dean Dr. Diane Disney, former Dean Robert Scannell and CCAC faculty rep Doug McCullough presented the awards.

Over 1,000 student-athletes from 14 campuses competed in the CCAC during the 2001-2002 season. The athletic directors who are responsible for the implementation of these programs are as follows:

Abington - Bob Barton; Beaver - Ron Nichols; Berks-Lehigh Bill Sutherland; Delaware - Tiz Griffith; DuBois - Sean Kelly; Fayette - Sandy Smith; Hazleton - Tom Caccese; McKeesport - Bob Leck; Mont Alto - Marty Ogle (President); New Kensington - Bob Darby; Schuylkill - John Cooper; Wilkes- Barre - Jack Monick; Worthington-Scranton - Jeff Mallas; York - Kerry Magni.
