Today's University Park forecast
sunny Sunny skies and warm conditions will prevail today as high pressure tracks eastward and draws milder air into the area. Clouds will gradually increase during the day Friday as a cold front slowly approaches from the west. Temperatures on Friday should remain above normal for this time of year. The cold front will reach State College Friday night and cause scattered showers to move through the area. Showers and clouds are likely to linger through the remainder of the weekend as the front stalls along the Mason-Dixon line.

On This Date In... 1990

A storm system pounded the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, producing a variety of precipitation. Heavy rains dumped 1.04 inches on Pittsburgh, PA, while 1.52 inches fell farther north in Buffalo, NY, both records for the date. Meanwhile, parts of Maine received up to 13 inches of snow. Strong southwesterly winds produced gusts of 68 mph in Massachusetts.

Current Weather Highlight

Two and a half years have passed since the last time a hurricane struck the United States, and officials warn people are suffering from “hazard amnesia” as a result. The director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) believes valuable information has been forgotten as a result of this. Since no hurricanes have come ashore since Hurricane Irene struck south Florida, those personnel who respond to such situations have not had their training or equipment tested in a long time. Hurricane season officially begins June 1.
