Letter to the Editor
Sex crime awareness needs to be promoted

After reading an article in The Daily Collegian on Monday, I got very frustrated.

If one out of every 10 women is sexually assaulted with in their lifetime, imagine how many women each year have become victims of rape crimes.

Everyone needs to realize this doesn't just happen to women. There are so many others that are victims of rape, such as children, men, and homosexuals, although the majority of the rape victims are women.

Most who are the victims are too scared or ashamed of telling others what have happened to them. I can't stand the fact when there are rape reports charged, people tend to question if it was rape or not.

Asking the rape victims questions that aren't necessary such as, "What were you wearing? Did you drink alcohol? Did you want it?" makes the victims feel like they deserved it. Making it seem like it was their fault, if they did wore a short skirt, or even if they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.

It shouldn't have to really matter what they wore, a "no" is a "no."

I also think that victims of sexual abuse shouldn't be terrorized in court. I don't think question like that are necessary. It is bad enough these stories are difficult and emotional to tell -- the women don't need stereotypical questions like, "what did you wear during the attack."

Courts should be more considerate of the issue and be more emotional towards to victims. I can't stand the fact that this society views women as sexual pleasures, not taking women oppression and abuse seriously. We should all help promote better ways to deal with the Rape and violence against women. Penn State should have stricter regulations to prevent these attacks from happening.

I don't want to see a close friend of mine or even myself as a woman become one of the next victims.
