Eight student leaders sent a letter to Penn State President Graham Spanier yesterday expressing their opposition to proposed changes to the academic calendar.

The Centre County Women's Resource Center and Players Nite Club, 112 W. College Ave., are teaming up this week to show partygoers that alcohol and sexual assault are not an acceptable mix.

A new program beginning today in the HUB-Robeson Center will allow students, faculty and staff to offer their perspective on controversial issues in an informal public forum.

As the debate over video surveillance cameras in downtown State College continues, borough and university officials have mixed opinions about the issue. One of the main reasons for the idea of placing these cameras on the stretch of East Beaver Avenue coined "Beaver Canyon" is past disturbances in that area. Although some students and other opponents have objected, saying the cameras are an invasion of privacy, Penn State spokesman Tysen Kendig disagreed and explained why the university might fund half of the cost for the cameras.

There were gowns and suits but no little gold men at the 8th annual Greek Oscars last night in the HUB auditorium. Over 35 awards were given to sorority and fraternity members and chapters in recognition of leadership, scholarship, service and activities.

As job recruiters place a greater emphasis on public speaking and presentation skills, Penn State is offering students an opportunity to refine their abilities.

The Alumni Association and the Lion Ambassadors are sponsoring the annual Old Main Open House from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

A man who sustained serious injuries after falling from an apartment window over the weekend was discharged from Altoona Hospital yesterday, said a hospital official.

The Penn State Student Awards Ceremony luncheon will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

The Nittany Lions (11-14, 2-6 Big Ten) will get their chance to put all of the game facets together when they host St. Bonaventure (10-5, 5-3 Atlantic-10) today at 3 p.m. on Beaver Field.


It took seven innings, but the Penn State softball team's offense came through with one run against Kent State yesterday, and that was all it needed.

When Tripken takes the field on Friday in Northwestern, she will still be carrying that hitless in her last 13 at-bats streak.


The Nittany Lions will face Robert Morris at the Sarni Tennis Center today at 3:30 and hope to continue their winning ways.

The Ruggers lost both of their flankers. Brett Cowen is out indefinitely, while Brett Ilgen was lost in the second game and couldn't play for the rest of the tournament.
