Lions to test Robert Morris
Men's tennis will give younger players a chance

Collegian Staff Writer

After an inspiring victory on Sunday, it's back to work for the Penn State men's tennis team (8-10 1-5).

The Nittany Lions will face Robert Morris at the Sarni Tennis Center today at 3:30 and hope to continue their winning ways.

This match will provide an opportunity for the younger players to gain some game experience and freshman Josh Rubens plans to take full advantage.

"We definitely expect we're going to win," he said. "I'm just looking to go out and do my thing and hopefully get more chances to get more experience."

Sophomore Todd Stecko agrees.

"This is a chance for some other guys to get into the lineup," he said.

The team captured its first Big Ten win of the season and snapped a fifteen game conference losing streak when it topped Michigan State 5-2 this past weekend.

Following the victory Stecko said the team had been rejuvenated.

"Now that we got a win we're more anxious to get on the court and get back to work," he said.

"I think everybody is pretty pumped, we have a lot of confidence and we want to play now, we don't want to wait."

The team does not want to look past Robert Morris, a team that poses no true threat, but that could be difficult considering the Big Ten matches coming up this weekend.

Penn State No. 1 singles player Jaime Gresh prepares to return a serve.

No. 52 Purdue will be in State College on Saturday followed by unranked Indiana on Sunday and the Lions have nothing but confidence as game time approaches.

"We're confident we can compete with these teams," Stecko said.

He believes that beating the Spartans on Sunday is the most important accomplishment the team has had in a while.

"I'd say more than anything else we've done this year, it was a match where guys stepped up and all the guys really gelled as a team," he said.

The team has stepped up its doubles play as well, which does nothing but take pressure off the singles lineup.

If the Lions can continue to win the doubles point and senior captain Jaime Gresh, who is currently ranked No. 106 in the nation, continues his stellar season the team sees no reason why they can't begin to make some waves in the Big Ten.

"Now we want to see if we can continue to win against teams we think we can compete against," Rubens said.
