There were gowns and suits but no little gold men at the 8th annual Greek Oscars last night in the HUB auditorium. Over 35 awards were given to sorority and fraternity members and chapters in recognition of leadership, scholarship, service and activities.

"The Greek Oscars is the one event that the entire Greek community is involved with together to celebrate Interfraternity Council, National Panhellenic Council and Panhellenic Council members," said Greg Chrest, co-chair of the Oscars planning committee.

The awards are earned through an objective point system based on an individual or chapter's academic, social, or philanthropic performance, Chrest said.

For the second year in a row, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity swept the National Pan-Hellenic Council awards.

"I'm proud of all the hard work that our chapter has done to do our best to serve and uplift the community, said Chris Thomas, Alpha Phi Alpha president. Thomas also won the NPHC Outstanding Fraternity Member award.

NPHC Outstanding Sorority Member award went to Thereze Alberts of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

The Interfraternity Council awarded Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 429 E. Hamilton Ave., the coveted Omega Epsilon Overall award for Fraternity Merit, which incorporates leadership, scholarship and activities.

"This is a great honor for our fraternity and I thank all our brothers for their hard work," said Drew Chappie, president of Delta Tau Delta.

Panhellenic Council's Woman of the Year award went to Lesley Brown of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Alpha Delta Pi also won the PHC Gold Chapter Excellence award.

IFC's Greek Man of the Year was Justin Fanelli of Acacia fraternity, 234 Locust Lane.

"You're absolutely nothing alone," Fanelli said. "Team is everything."

Keynote speaker Michael Brunner, president of AT&T Federal Services, congratulated the audience and described what leadership really means.

"Leadership is not about management or being the boss or having charisma," said Brunner. "Rather it is about having a vision, strategies and communication skills. The one thing that you must have is integrity because you must lead by example," he said.
