On This Date In... 1990

Twenty-two cities reported record low temperatures for the date as readings dipped into the 20s and 30s across much of the eastern U.S. Freezing temperatures severely damaged peach and apple orchards in West Virginia, where prolonged mild weather since January had caused an early blooming of spring vegetation. State and Federal agencies estimated a 50 percent loss in production for peaches and "Delicious Red Apples".

Current Weather Highlight

Colorado State University hurricane expert William Gray has revised his prediction for the 2002 Atlantic season, slightly backing off his December forecast. Speaking at the National Hurricane Conference in Orlando, Florida, Gray announced there would be 12 named storms, seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. Gray says the season continues to shape up as above-average. He says while the forecast has been altered by one for each category, the season still shapes up as active.
