Sex, lies & laughter
NRT to tackle superficial desire, 'Kids in the Hall'

Collegian Staff Writer

This weekend's plays are what almost every twenty-something can relate to and appreciate: relationships built upon lust, shallowness and some good comedy.

No Refund Theatre will be performing Hopscotch: The New York Sex Comedy as well as various skits from Comedy Central's Kids in the Hall.

"Hopscotch is a play about shallow, superficial, lustful relationships in New York City," said Director Ann Ettlinger.

Wendy R. Williams is the playwright of Hopscotch. She moved to New York from Texas five years ago and is currently directing her play in the city.

Ettlinger (senior-management science and information systems) got the idea to direct this play when she went to New York and happened to see Williams' play. She liked the play so much that when she came home she got a phone book and called every Wendy Williams in New York to try to find the playwright.

"I found out that there are some not so nice Wendy Williams' in New York," Ettlinger said.

After locating the real writer, Williams invited Ettlinger to see the play again and join her and the cast for drinks following the play. Ettlinger got a chance to talk with Williams and mentioned that she would be directing the play at Penn State.

"She said that she is going to come this Saturday to see the production," Ettlinger said.

The play is a comedy about relationships and friendships in New York City. The characters in the play pretend to be people they are not.

Becky Wall (senior-journalism) plays Margo Manning, a woman who is referred to as "the crazy, scary bitch," during the play. Margo is searching for the man with whom she had a one-night stand. Her motivation to find him is the fact that he is well endowed with a 12-inch penis. She hires a private investigator to find him. The private investigator finds him, but he is with another woman and from there a love triangle ensues.

This is the last play that Wall will be acting in and she said she is happy to go out of NRT playing this character.

"This is a fun part that you can lose your inhibitions in and do whatever you want," Wall said.

Margo is a bizarre character who works jobs as a fortuneteller, auto mechanic and a porn star. She pulls vibrators out of her pants and orgasms multiple times on stage. "The play is a campy comedy that has had me laughing the entire time during rehearsals," Ettlinger said.

The second half of the night is devoted to 15 Kids in the Hall sketch comedies. Kids in the Hall is a television show with a cast of five male Canadian comedians. The show aired for five seasons on many different stations from 1989 to 1994. Re-runs still play on Comedy Central.

"The sketch comedy is more of a Monty Python's comedy and everyday humor," said Matt Hughes, director of the sketches.Hughes (sophomore-information sciences and technology) and Ettlinger are both avid viewers of the show and decided to devote some of the night to repro-
ducing sketches from the comedy.

Kristian Crummie (freshman-film and video) is an actor that performs in some of the sketches. Crummie's favorite sketch is "Kathie Cathy." The sketch involves two secretaries who are trying to figure out if a co-worker is gay. "It is a very different sense of humor that people can relate to," Crummie said.

"Gezbo" is another favorite of Crummie's. Crummie plays Gezbo, a sleazy guy who dresses up as a clown to try to sell used videos to children.

Hopscotch and Kids in the Hall will be showing at 8 tonight and tomorrow night in 111 Forum. Tickets are free and open to the public.
